Der Brandermittler Sean McCaffrey, Sohn des verstorbenen Steven „Bull“ McCaffrey, arbeitet jetzt zusammen mit seinem Onkel Brian im selben Feuerwehrhaus in Chicago. Als Sean beauftragt wird, ein tödliches Feuer zu untersuchen, stellen er und seine Partnerin Maggie bald fest, dass es sich um mehr als um ein normales Feuer handelt. Die Hinweise, die sie entdecken, führen sie einen tückischen Weg der Brandstiftung, des Mordes und des internationalen Terrorismus entlang. Sean muss seiner Intuition folgen und versucht mit Hilfe des berüchtigten inhaftierten Brandstifters Ronald Bartel herausfinden, wer hinter dem Feuer steckt, um die Drahtzieher daran zu hindern, ihre teuflischen Pläne zu verwirklichen.
