Eddie Murphy ist Axel Foley, ein Polizist mit hellem Köpfchen und großer Klappe aus der Arbeiterstadt Detroit. Er jagt den Mörder seines besten Freundes – bis ins vornehme Beverly Hills hinein. Doch die respektlose Art des Detroit-Cops Axel stößt im Polizeirevier von Beverly Hills nicht gerade auf Wohlgefallen. Er bekommt zwei Kollegen (Judge Reinhold & John Aston) zur Seite gestellt, die das Schlimmste verhindern sollen.
