Seit der große Kristall sein Licht und damit seine magische Kraft verlor, beherrschen die raubvogelähnlichen „Skeksis“ das Land. Nur ein „Gelfling“ kann dem Kristall das Licht zurückbringen und die Schreckensherrschaft der „Skeksis“ beenden. Der junge Jen, einer der letzten „Gelflinge“, nimmt dem Kampf gegen die „Skeksis“ und die Suche nach dem Kristall auf. Wenn die drei Sonnen in einem günstigen Winkel stehen, kann er dem erkalteten Kristall sein Licht wiedergeben und dem wundersamen Land den Frieden zurückbringen.
