Angeblich soll er die Akte in einem wichtigen Fall verschlampt haben. Doch der junge Anwalt Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) kennt den wahren Grund für seine Kündigung: Er ist homosexuell und mit dem Aids-Virus infiziert. Als die Krankheit ausbricht, lässt ihn Kanzlei-Chef Wheeler (Jason Robards), früher sein Förderer, fallen. Andrew kann das nicht akzeptieren – er beginnt zu kämpfen.
