Als Ned (Bryan Cranston), ein überfürsorglicher aber liebender Vater, zusammen mit seiner Familie seine Tochter in Stanford besucht, trifft er auf seinen größten Alptraum: ihren Freund, der gutmeinende aber nicht gesellschaftsfähige Silicon Valley Millionär Laird (James Franco). Der zugeknöpfte Ned findet den peinlichen Laird absolut unangebracht für seine Tochter. Die einseitige Rivalität und Ned’s panische Reaktionen eskalieren als er feststellt, dass er keinen Einfluss in der glamourösen High-Tech Welt hat und Laird kurz davor ist, seiner Tochter einen Heiratsantrag zu stellen.
